S.A. Technologies, a precision engineering company that specializes in advanced robotics & technology was commissioned to conceive a strategy & provide services & equipment required to run a full scale test of a nuclear reactor removal for the DOE. S.A. Technologies contacted Pierce Pacific Mfg. to design a specialized tool, a power clamshell bucket which S.A. Technologies engineers nicknamed T-REX. The test consisted of a number of elements & implements, but T-REX was to be the primary work tool. T-REX was mounted to a John Deere 850D in place of the standard digging bucket.
This clamshell bucket tool was designed to accomplish unique tasks while utilizing high forces and maintaining a small weight conscious package. The result is a tool that has been designed to achieve a very high performance factor to weight/size ratio. This bucket will primarily be used to dislodge and grapple materials that include cast iron slabs and blocks, structural steel, rubblized concrete, rectangular graphite bars, and miscellaneous tubes up to 4” in diameter. Occasionally the bucket will encounter materials that will require size reduction. The severing feature on the bucket will be used to facilitate size reduction without requiring a tool change to the standard shear.
Testing was successfully conducted at the S.A. Technologies site in Loveland CO August 16 – 20th 2010. T-REX exceeded performance expectations.
